{"id":38,"date":"2014-02-08T04:39:27","date_gmt":"2014-02-08T04:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pacificng.com\/blog\/?p=38"},"modified":"2014-02-08T04:39:27","modified_gmt":"2014-02-08T04:39:27","slug":"we-lose-one-of-our-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.pacificng.com\/blog\/?p=38","title":{"rendered":"We Lose one of our own\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Armstrong died in Mid December in Pennsylvania where he had retired several years before.<\/p>\n<p>Here among western railroad historians, Tom was known for his love of, and research on the Nevada California Oregon (NCO) railroad, and its related lines&#8230;\u00a0 He was The expert of record on these lines\u2026 a title of honor earned by years of careful and comprehensive research.<\/p>\n<p>Those of us who were lucky enough to meet him, and maybe join him on a trip to explore a railroad right of way, NCO or other, knew him as a kind soul who freely shared his knowledge and research\u2026 \u00a0and a really nice guy.<\/p>\n<p>Much of his organized research is currently available on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbaneagle.com\/nco\/\">Slim Rails<\/a> .\u00a0 He had given us photos and other information to post on Pacificng\u2026 we were holding that information, waiting\u00a0 for Tom to write the page on our site\u2026 Now, that will not happen and others will have to pick up his torch. \u00a0Several years ago he donated some hundreds of pounds of iron railroad castings to the SPCRR at Ardenwood\u2026 There is an effort being made by his friends to complete and publish <i>his<\/i> book on the NCO\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In his real life he was the Rev. Thomas E. Armstrong\u2026 \u00a0a minister of the Presbyterian Church. \u00a0He served congregations in California to Pennsylvania to Ohio. \u00a0I suspect he was pretty good at that calling too.<\/p>\n<p>His obituary may be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharonherald.com\/obituaries\/x1353066956\/The-Rev-Thomas-E-Armstrong\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While I am not a Presbyterian, nor a particularly observant Christian, I would like to offer the following from the Presbyterian Book of Common Prayer\u2026\u00a0 It seems to suit Tom and his memory<\/p>\n<p><i>Eternal God,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>we remember with thanksgiving,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>those who have loved and served you in your church on earth,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>who now rest from their labors<\/i><br \/>\n<i>[especially those most dear to us<\/i><br \/>\n<i>whom we name in our hearts before you . . .].<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Keep us in fellowship with all your saints,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>and bring us at last<\/i><br \/>\n<i>to the joy of your heavenly kingdom.<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Amen.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Go in Peace&#8230; Randy<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Armstrong died in Mid December in Pennsylvania where he had retired several years before.
