Re: Utah Construction

The Utah Construction Co. also provided the Nevada Short Line with a Vulcan 0-4-0T while the line was under construction. Looking through my notes the UCC owned more than 50 n.g. locomotives. All were 0-4-0Ts, in the 15-20 ton range and most with 10x16 cylinders. Most of the locomotives that were bo...

Re: Eureka & Palisade B&S cars

John replied in an e-mail that the car at Eureka was measured for his drawing.

Re: Eureka & Palisade B&S cars

Thanks Brian, I was unaware of the E&P ventilated box car's fate; that's too bad. I made some cursory measurements and took a few snapshots of this equipment while on the way to the Grand Canyon in the 1960s. At least the car was well documented and Herman Darr did a nice drawing of the car. The car...

Re: Eureka & Palisade B&S cars

There are two existing E&P box cars. One is across the street from the Eureka County court house in Eureka. It was converted to a bunk car at some point and was parked at Eureka for use by train crews laying over at the southern terminal. The car was left behind (less its trucks) when the line was t...

Re: E&P, EN, Ruby Hill locomotive roster

The correct date is October 1, 1874. #3 is thought to have been sold for scrap in 1917-18.

Re: E&P, EN, Ruby Hill locomotive roster

Randy, E&P #3 I went back and looked at the Xerox copies of the spec sheet for E&P #2 and 3 I got from SMU back in 1990 and the Hereafter notation didn't show up. (resolution problem?) The Eureka Daily Sentinel of 3-15-1874 reported that the E&P locomotive "Belmont" was in the Palisade Machine shop ...

Re: E&P, EN, Ruby Hill locomotive roster

The story I got from Judge John Sexton's (C.B. Sexton's son) ex-wife, Louise was that in the spring of 1947 John Sexton, who was then the Eureka County District Attorney, got a call from a resident of Palisade telling him that #12 had been removed. Sexton thought it was a joke but drove up to Palisa...

Re: E&P, EN, Ruby Hill locomotive roster

Just a couple of quick thoughts. I would be interested in where the name "Hereafter" for #3 comes from. This is the first time I have run across this. There is evidence from the Eureka Sentinel that #3 was named "Belmont". This would be in keeping with the E&P naming their freight engines after town...

Re: Eureka & Palisade B&S cars

Box car EN #203 is one of the original Billmeyer and Smalls box cars. In 1914, JE Sexton culled out a number of cars for his proposed Surprise Valley Railroad and renumbered them as such. Among this group were three box cars, SV 201, SV 202 and SV 203. After the Nevada Transportation Company was mer...

Re: Eureka & Palisade B&S cars

The E&P acquired 21 Billmeyer and Smalls box cars. The first two were reported to be on the road when the E&P started operating on the first 20 miles of completed track in July, 1874. All had arrived by 1878. On the E&P the box cars were numbered 1-41, all odd numbers. At least one was a ventilated ...
