Nevada Central Box car body found

A Nevada Central box car body has recently been moved for preservation by a local museum.

The dimensions are reported to be:

length 22' 2"
width 7' 10"
height 8' 6"

Any ideas on who the builder is?

I cant help you with your question Mr Hees, but do you have any idea which museum is doing the preservation?

Its a local county/historical museum. I was contacted by a BLM archeologist, who is coordinating it on her own time... (not an official BLM project)

She found Dan Markoff, who sent her off with a list of folks that may have information. She found me...

I understand that it was moved to a local ranch to be used as a bunk house... now is moving to a private home to be restored, then to the museum.

At 22' its not Carter, but is early, maybe Barney & Smith or Stockton and Ione...

I pulled out Sloan's "Century + Ten", the D&RG Class 2 boxcar was 22' (24' over end sills for draft gear). This car would date between 1872-1874 built by Billmeyer and Small and would represent the boxcar shown in period advertisements for narrow gauge equipment.

The NC had Billmeyer & Small box cars. If this is one of them, then this is great!

The only other existing one we knew of was the body at Gold Strike Casino near Boulder City. And that one was reportedly sliced into pieces when it was removed along with the Shay.

Herman Darr's plan says the B&S boxcars were 24' 1" long, and 7' wide... so this car doesn't seem to fit...

Once the body surfaces and one of us can examine it maybe all will be known. Or the mystery will deepen.

One - Do we know how the reported length was determined? There are different ways to measure a car -- over siding, over end sill (and then we might have an exposed end sill), and some other kind of extreme length.

Does someone have the length of the carbody that used to be at Gold Strike Casino near Boulder City?

On the NC we have three known sources of cars: second-hand M&SV Carter built, second-hand Stockton & Ione and B&S built new.
