Digital (CAD) Modeling Welcome!

Digital (CAD) Modeling Welcome!

Postby CraigH » Wed Mar 31, 2010 9:47 am

Hi all,

Here's a welcome to the Digital Modeling Section.

I suppose a definition and foundation for this forum might be usefull.

1) It's a place to share work in progress.
2) It's a place to ask questions.
3) It's a place that can evolve in any way needed.
4) It's a place to discuss drafting and illustration technique.

What would you guys like out of a section like this? Personally, I'd like to see a place for technical discussion on drafting, software, etc.

Craig,

Thanks for creating the digital modeling section. I would like see who is using what programs. I am using Sketchup from Google mainly because of the cost (free) and the ease of learning the program. I also have a professional program called Alibre but while it looks like its parametric features will make it very useful for large projects, I have found it more difficult to do some very basic things when compared to Sketchup. Less intuitive I think.

What programs are others using?

Solomani,
I'm using:
1) AutoCAD 2006- Basically it's set up for mapping and civil engineering.
2) Google Sketch-Up

Free programs I have but generally don't use (time to learn the things hasn't happened, so they're archived on the computer). Intended for gaming, I wanted to use them for building flight sim aircraft. I have used them to open drawings and convert file formats.
3) Blender (free) http://www.blender.org/
4) Milkshape (free) http://chumbalum.swissquake.ch/
5) G-Max (free) http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

Other Graphics software:
Corel Graphics Suite- For decal artwork, image editing, laser artwork.

An addendum to Craig's post: G-Max is useful really for gaming purposes, you cannot render with it. Essentially it is a scaled down free version of 3DS Max designed for gamers to use.
