Desert Camp... 2015 Wabuska to Thorne

Desert Camp... 2015 Wabuska to Thorne

Postby Randy Hees » Mon Jul 27, 2015 5:56 pm

Andrew and I and others do an annual camping trip in the desert... and include at least some railroad archeology...

We camp at Ft Churchill on the Carson River... Just across the river and less than a half a mile from the Mina Branch... close to the right of way of the C&C... The Bureau of Reclamation had a narrow gauge dam construction railroad near by... This years exploration is a trip starting at Wabuska, and following the right of way to Shurtz and if time allows to Thorne...

Last year we went in search of the only refrigerator car on the C&C and found it... we also followed the C&C from Dayton to Mound House... the year before we did Churchill to Wabuska... before that we went from Washout and Churchill west until we were foiled by the fences of Johnson Transportation...

We have reserved the large group "horse camp" across from the main park from Wednesday August 5th through the following Sunday... There is lots of room... There may be alcohol consumed... there will be a big fire... We play "Cards Against Humanity"...

Join us if the mood strikes you...

I will be heading out tomorrow morning and expect to arrive at the Fort around 1:00PM or so.

Please note, we are not at the "Horse Camp", we are at the "Scout Camp". Neither camp is located directly neighboring the Fort, rather they are on the south side of the Carson river from Buckland Station.

Things did not go quite as planned this year. In the weeks leading up to our reservation the Lahontan valley (Prehistoric Lake Lahontan) was inundated with heavy rain. Strangely, the storms were staying to the south of the Carson river, which meant the river was "dry" along camp but the low spots in camp itself were filled with it. On our second night there we were hit with a decent thunderstorm around 2:30 AM that caused a fair deal of chaos. The lack of sleep and a steady stream of friends coming and going each day kept is there kept us in camp this year.

Wabuska to Thorne will have to wait until a later date.

This is not the river, this is a road through camp the day after the thunderstorm.
