Part of the fun of building routes is dealing with the inaccuracies of maps. For example, there's a map of Promontory on May 10, 1869 (map 3 from the 1969 Historical Base Map and Documented Narrative publication from the NPS). It looks nice and detailed, with a scale and everything. Unfortunately, when overlaid on top of the actual ground imagery, it appears to be missing a bend in the track, right about the location of the joining of the railroads:

The blue line is a tracing of the current reconstructed tracks; placed upon the original historic grade. You can see how the map aligns properly on the UP side, but not so much on the CP side....
