Yuba Valley Wood Co ?

Postby John Barnhill » Tue Jul 27, 2010 6:45 pm

Recently rediscovered by Chris Graves, the narrow guage Yuba Valley Wood Co grade can be found just downhill from the old Central Pacific siding of Tamarack halfway between Cisco and Troy. Anyone got any further info?? This is a brand new re-discovery! Sounds like something that definately needs looking into! Definately took them by surprise. Only other info is that it lies on the Nichols (sp?) estate and was run/owned by a Mr Nichols. Blt sometime after 1968 using old Central Pacific rail.

Directions, I80 east, exit at Rainbow Lodge, take old 40 east to end at yellow gate, hike uphill towards UP line.

That is certainly an interesting find, I'll have to get up there and check that out.

Heading that way anytime soon? ;)

You guys are gluttons for the obscure and difficult! Maybe this is why eveyone just rehashes D&RG and C&TS on other sites...

Well someone's gotta map the thing!

John gets out into the woods more than I do honestly, I've got some serious abandoned railroad hike envy at this point. John's been off exploring the Mich-Cal and so far all I've managed to do this summer was get lost around Lake Spaulding.* Once I buy another car in the coming months I'll be heading up a few expeditions.

It's a shame you aren't going to be around, John and I could take you on some wild adventures to Towle Bros. country.

Andrew

*: That isn't entirely true, I did find some Birce and Smart row on my first trip up there I just wasn't sure it was in fact part of the ROW.

Sunday will likely work best for me, although I am flexible for Saturday depending on your schedule.
Could make a fun little adventure if anyone else is up for it, how's Olin these days?

Ok, checked it out. The owner of the property is a nice lady but vary wary of people tresspassing. Not recommended that anyone go up there. Didnt see much anyhows. Hiked up the hill, found a grade intersecting the road I was on. Followed this east for a few hundred yards through mild brush. No evidence of a railroad at this point. A phone call later confirmed I was on the row but didn't go far enough to see ties, spikes and a switch. Oh well. For now, I'll leave all the exploration and documentation to Chris and Ken Yeo who has also been up there. Hopefully I'll get some more history info and maybe Chris will get it mapped.
