Hawaiian Railway Society 65-ton Whitcomb

After languishing in the Hawaiian Railway Society's (HRS) Ewa Yard for 37 years ex-NAD (Naval Ammunition Depot) No. 10, 11 or 12, we don't know which, was moved into the maintenance shed for evaluation on 1 Feb 2011. USN 65-00174, the number she received ca. 1960, had been cannibalized and vandalized while waiting for her "moment" and was in sad shape but not without potential. The "A" end engine was successfully started on 19 Feb 2011 and the decision reached to restore her to operation. Extensive body work was required as well as wiring and other mechanical work. The "B" end engine was started in Feb 2012 by the same gentleman who got the "A" end running the previous year. Today, with body work completed (with the exception of filling pits on the roof and replacing the drip rails) 65-00174 received her assembly coat of paint. The final coat will be dark machinery gray and she will be lettered U.S.N. 65-00174 in her ca. 1960 paint scheme. While she still needs side cab windows and number light repairs as well as finishing the roof the old 1944 warhorse is operational. More work will be required as she gets sorted out but it is planned that 65-00174 will return to service next Saturday, 12 October at the Hawaiian Railway Society's 43rd annual meeting.
