Disaster in Cananea

Post by elminero67 » Sat Oct 09, 2010 10:07 am

Hola: One of the key towns I have been researching for the Sonora Narrow Gauge book is a mining town just south of the Arizona border called Cananea: Unfortunately I have not spent as much time in Cananea as it is the epicenter of drug cartel activity, and for the last four years has been the scene of a labor strike at the mine which has made it a very tense place-during one of my visits I was involved in a armed confrontation that I still dont know who were the good guys and who were the bad guys-just lots of men with semi-automatic rifles running around. One of the places I had hoped to visit was the archives of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co/mining museum there that closed down many years ago. Unfortunately about two weeks ago the building housing the archives and thousands of irreplaceable historic photographs was burned during a labor dispute. :(

That is terrible news! Had you been able to visit the archives in the past?
